2009 Wrap Up

First of all i'd like to wish everyone a happy new year. I wrapped up the year by spending time at home in Mudgee with my family and friends. I didn't spend a whole lot of time at home this year so it was nice to get home and have a break and catch up with everyone.
Looking back on 2009 i had a pretty good year. I won an aussie comp and i won an international comp. I did over 100 shows and visited 8 different countries and only suffered one injury that didn't keep me off the bike for too long.

My season on the IFMXF tour wasn't as succesful as i would have liked it to have been. I didnt place very well through the whole series but i had a lot of fun over there and got to tour Europe with my chick Jo. I was happy to finish off the trip with the win in best trick and Freestyle in Namibia.

The Crusty Tour was fun as always. Everyone has probably read by now about the bitter court battle between Global Action Sports and Fleshwound films. The whole thing sucks because all the riders have been getting caught up in the middle of the whole thing and have all had to choose sides. Let's just hope it all gets sorted out soon so we can get all the boys back together and keep doing some top notch shows.

I didn't get to do as many Showtime FMX shows as i would have liked to in 2009 due to other commitments but the team has had a great year. The Hart and Huntinton Tour and the Halloween shows at Warner Brothers Movie World were definitely the highlights. I'm really looking forward to doing more of the Showtime shows in 2010, i
definitely miss doing them.

2010 is going to be a fun year. The Crusty regional tour kicks off on February 13 and hits all the smaller towns up the east coast. We'll see some fresh faces on the tour this year so make sure you come and check it out. The Nitro Circus Tour starts in may and I suggest you guys go out and buy tickets because there's not many left and the show is going to be sick. I've heard a few rumours going around about whats going to be in the show and some of it will have to be seen to be believed.

Apart from that I'm thinking of doing some Australian comps this year. Up until last year the comps weren't worth going to but some organisers have been putting some effort into it and have been putting on some pretty good events that i think will definitely be worth checking out.

My year starts off next week on January 16 at Mulwala Extreme Sports Expo. I've been doing this show since my very first year with Showtime and it's one of the best weekends of the year. Wakeboarding, skiiing, BMX, and monster trucks shows are happening all through the day. I'll be there with my team mates matty McFerran and Brad Burch and there's going to even be a special guest appearance by captain carry on himself, Blake "Bilko" Williams who will be making his first appearance back on the bike since winning his X games Gold Medal. Definitely not to be missed.

I'm going to be updating my site a lot more this year, i got pretty slack last year but keep checking back for show dates, pics and updates. Hope to catch you guys at a show this year, don't hesitate to come up and say G'day.

MEDIA RELEASE - STEVE MINI WINS FREESTYLE MOTOCROSS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND IN NAMIBIA

Australian freestyle motocross rider Steve Mini has taken first place in the FIM Freestyle Motocross World Championship “Night of Jumps” held in Namibia, Africa on Saturday night.

Mini, who is originally from NSW is the first Australian rider ever to win a round of the prestigious European based championship and only the third Australian EVER to win an international FMX event.

A brand new addition to this round of the World Championship was the “Best Trick” contest, where Mini also claimed victory, with a “Tsunami Back-Flip.”

“I’m so stoked to come over here and win Freestyle and Best Trick in the one event! It’s been a pretty tough month being away from home to compete in Europe, so its awesome to finish on a high note. The people of Africa have been great, but I can’t wait to be home this week!” Steve Mini said.

The win boosted Mini to 8th overall in the World Championship standings, despite him having missed a round with prior commitments.

Mini was incredibly lucky to escape serious injury at a demonstration only a week prior to competing in Africa, when the borrowed machine he was riding failed moments before Mini launched into a huge backflip combination trick; he was forced to eject from his bike while soaring 40 feet in the air. Luckily the 26 year old suffered only minor bruising.

July '09

The last few weeks have been really relaxing. After a massive year of crusty shows and flying back forth to Europe I was feeling pretty worn out and not really enjoying riding much. So I took some time off to let my broken foot heal and to have surgery on my leg to get the rod and screws out from when I broke it over 5 years ago. It was suppose to be simple surgery but because the rod had been in there so long the bone had grown over the screws and they had trouble getting the screws. The bone ended up shattering all around the scews so it's taking a little bit longer to heal then expected but its given me a good chance to have a break and let my other injuries heal up. So now I'm excited about riding again in a couple of weeks.

I've been keeping up with the guys in America while they're training for X Games and I know that Bilko, Mase and Nate have all been training hard so I think both the Best Trick comp and the freestyle are going to be awesome this year. There's a couple of new guys in best trick so it'll be interesting to see how they go.
I definitely think Sincs is looking good for a win in Best trick and Bilko has a good chance in freestyle so good luck to them both.

Well that's it for me. All my new photos are on my laptop which I left at Frankfurt airport so as soon as I get that back keep an eye out for a heap of new photos from both on and off the bike. Also if anyone is after a scooter I'm selling my Yamaha 100cc scooter. Its practically new and I've only really used it to cruise around and do work around my jumps so if you're interested email me steve@stevemini.com. Later.

May '09 Update

Well I've been a bit slack with my updates this year so I'll give you a quick run down on what's been happening since NZ crusty finished.

I headed over to Berlin for the first 2 rounds of the IFMXF Series. The first night I had major bike problems and ended up in 9th place. The second night I pulled it together and ended up in 4th place and winning the whip comp. I had a week off until my next event so me and my buddy Sim headed down to Barcelona to hang out by the water in the warm weather and drink some beers, which is pretty much all we did for the whole week. Barcelona is an amazing place and is definitely on the top of my list of favourite cities. We then flew up to Rotterdam for the FMX Fever event. I got 3rd place on the first night and second place on the second night so I was stoked. I flew back to Australia and straight down to South Australia for the FMX Championships. It was a tough line up with my main competition being Cam Sinclair, Joel Balchin, Chucky Norris and Josh Sheehan. I rode smooth and consistent all day and won the event. I only had a couple of days off until the Royal easter Show which was an awesome 2 weeks as usual.

I missed the swiss IFMXF event because I went back to Mudgee for my brothers wedding.
The wedding was sick and we all had a lot of fun so congratulations to my brother and his new wife Michelle. It was then back on the plane to Germany for another IFMXF round. I left Brisbane on the Wednesday night and flew for 26 hours, spent about 40 hours in Mannheim then got back on a plane and flew 22 hours home so I spent more time on the plane then I did in Europe. I had a day off to rest then it was down to Melbourne for the Crusty Tour. The Crusty Tour is sick and I love being on it so I was pretty excited.
Unfortunately there's always one rider that goes down before the show. Myles Richmond had a nasty crash and broke his arm and we all thought that was it but about 2 hours before the show I lost the bike doing a no handed catwalk and fell all the way to the flat ground breaking my foot. It was, by far, the worst crash I've had and I was really lucky just to break my foot. So I've just had the last weekend resting and rode last nights show in Bris. I had a doctor give me shots to numb it which worked a treat until it wore off 5 minutes into the show which ended up being extremely painful. But I'll give it another shot for tonights show and see how it goes.

He won the Whip Contest together with Brody Wilson (USA) and reached 4th position in the final. PRESS RELEASE! Steve Mini conquers podium at FMX Fever Netherlands

Steve Mini conquers the podium both nights at the FMX Fever in the Netherlands last weekend. On Saturday he reached 3rd place behind Remi Bizouard and Matt Buyten. Sunday the “Aussie” put himself on 2nd position, only beaten by “Frenchie” Bizouard, but ahead of US-Boy Matt Buyten.

At his first appearance in the Netherlands “Aussie” Steve Mini felt really good. Ahoy arena in Rotterdam was the perfect playground for the Australian FMX pro. The track of the ramp contest was similar to the Crusty Tour in Australia and New Zealand, so Steve could show perfect runs with most difficult tricks. With lots of flip combos and his unique triple combos Steve reached the podium on both days, only beaten by FIM Freestyle MX World Champion Remi Bizouard.

Now Steve gets back to Australia and prepares himself for the next rounds of the FIM Freestyle MX World Championships at the NIGHT of the JUMPs Graz (Austria) on April 17th and 18th.

PRESS RELEASE! Steve Mini wins South Australian FMX Championships

Out off the plane onto the compound. After reaching his first IFMXF final at the NIGHT of the JUMPs in Berlin and getting both days on the podium at the FMX Fever in Rotterdam Steve Mini got another milestone in his FMX career by winning the South Australian FMX Championships in Wudinna against a star-packed field.

The South Australian FMX Championships is a competition that has only been running for 2 years, but this year attracted 14 riders including most of Australia’s top guys like Cam Sinclair, Joel Balchin, Chucky Norris, Josh Sheehan and of course Steve Mini. Mini said: “Even though I was extremely jetlagged from Europe i rode well all day.” He qualified first, keeping in front of Sinclair by just a few points.

In his final Mini nailed all of his tricks perfectly. With a Holy Grab, KOD Indy flip, Lazyboy to no hand landing, Superflip, Clickerflip, no hand lander flip and a four trick combo with Holy Grab to 1-Hand Indy to Rock Solid to No-Hand-Lander he put himself on top of the field and took the win ahead of Cam Sinclair.

In the interview with the Freerider MX magazine he said: "I am kinda surprised to win here today. When you're up against the likes of Cam Sinclair, Joel Balchin and Chucki Norris you definitely can't bank on walking away with the cash. I put together a really smooth run that felt good. This is my first win in an Australian competition, so I'm stoked."

PRESS RELEASE! Steve Mini rocks at the Night of the Jumps/FIM Freestyle MX World Champs in Berlin.

Steve Mini was rocking the NIGHT of the JUMPs / FIM Freestyle MX World Championships Germany’s capital city yesterday. In the packed o2 World arena in Berlin he won the IFMXF Whip Contest together with Brody Wilson (USA), And then he did an amazing qualification run and reached his first IFMXF final.

He ended up 4th, missing the podium only by a few points. This reached Brody Wilson with perfect extensions and his well-known style. 2nd place went to Brice Izzo with massive flip combos like Shaolin Flip, Tsunami Flip, Superman Seatgrab Flip and Lazyboy Flip. February update

The NZ Crusty tour turned out to be the best tour that we have done. 6 weeks of travelling is a long time to be away but we all ended up having a lot of fun and with the addition of two of my good mates, Robbie Marshall and Chucky Norris on the team it was an awesome group to be travelling with.

Along with riding we did a lot of cool things. We spent a few days in Rotorua where they have a big downhill luge. We all raced in a big group and pretty much smashed each other along with the luges until we were all bruised and could'nt do it anymore. Bilko, my girlfriend Jo and i all went up in a sea plane and took a joy flight around al the volcanos which was a cool experience.

In Auckland i got to bungy jump a mini bike off the Auckland Harbour Bridge. It was for a media thing for the Auckland Crusty Show and although it was scary, it was a lot of fun. One of the most fun parts of the tour which took up most our time was r/c car racing. Most of us bought r/c cars at the start of tour and every different town we hit up the local bmx tracks and had races. Most of the cars were destroyed by the end of tour but they were definitely worth the money.

All the shows went well and the riding was awesome, We were lucky to have good weather and not too much wind to deal with so the conditions were sweet. We topped off the last show in Nelson with what turned out to be the best after party we've ever had.

Now that i'm home I have a week to get some practise time in before heading to Berlin next week for the first round of the IFMXF World Championship Series. I rode a couple of rounds of the series last year and didnt go so well so I'm keen to get back over there again and put a bit more effort in. From Berlin i'll travel to Rotterdam for another show before coming home for the Easter Show.

I also just got my new SixSixone helmet custom painted by Browns Grafix. It turned out even better than I thought with my Jetpilot logos all over it so a big thanks to Jetpilot and Browny at Browns Grafix for the awesome job.

January update

Tuesday was a sad day for the FMX community with news of Jeremy Lusks passing after a horrible crash in Costa Rica on Saturday night. Some of the guys over here on the Crusty Tour in NZ were really close to him and it's been a huge reality check for all of us as to just how dangerous the sport really is and tonights show in Christchurch is definitely going to be a tough one.

I didn't know Jeremy well but i heard nothing but good things about him and as a rider he had an unbelievable amount of talent. All our thoughts over here in NZ are with Jeremys wife and family.

Our first show of the NZ Crusty Tour in Napier was definitely a successful one. About 8000 people packed the stadium of the beach side city to witness the first stop of the "Unleash Hell" Tour.

Practise didn't start too well with Jim McNeil breaking his hand after getting twisted on a cordova flip. Then a few bikes hadn't turned up so everyone was a little unprepared. By the time show time came around we pulled it together and everyone rode unreal. Sinclair landed his double flip perfectly on to the portable downy which we were all stoked to see.

After the show we headed down to Wellington and we've all just been chilling out here doing some fun stuff like paintballing along with a little bit of partying for Australia Day. Chack back next week for pics of the Wellington show as it should be a good one.
